Exercises for Sciatica

If you’re suffering from Sciatica, you might be surprised to know that physical exercise is really much better than bed rest. Although you may feel like lying in bed and resting rather than exercising, active physical exercise is the best mechanism for healing sciatica discomfort and pain. Most doctors tell their patients to rest for a day or two after a sciatica attack but ironically this inactivity will only aid in worsening the discomfort. The lack of movement causes the muscles and spinal structures to weaken.  This makes their function as the support for the back weak also. This in turn can lead to rear injury and strain on the muscles and spine which adds to the lower body and back pain.

As you know there’s fluid in between discs, and workouts for sciatica keeps the fluids healthy and the discs well lubricated. This also helps with the distribution of nutrition and strengthening from the muscles on the abdomen and back. There are numerous workouts for sciatica and mostly involves stretching to target particular areas.  Remember to get a diagnosis of the discomfort first, in order to determine the best kind of physical exercise program that will target your problem area.

The #1 most overlooked cause of back pain which has NOTHING to do with muscle imbalances, back-blow-outs, diet, or genetics… yet can’t be fixed with drugs, doctors-visits or even surgery. Chapters 5 and 14 reveal how to conquer this little-known back-killer!

How to reduce the #1 dietary cause of back pain – Make a few EASY changes to your diet to reduce this back-pain causing “evil” and you’ll not only reduce your back pain… you’ll also drastically reduce your chances of developing heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s… as well as nearly any other degenerative disease you can think of! (Chapter 6)

The 6 types of “professionals” you’ve most likely dealt with already (or will in the future)… and why… if you’re like most people… NONE of them can give you any long-term back pain relief by themselves (Chapter 8 )

6 easy-to-implement lifestyle changes you can make TODAY – Start these the day you read the book and you can begin watching your back pain disappear just a few days later! (Chapter 10)

Why your irritating “trigger points” are causing much more damage than you think… plus… I’ll reveal which of the top 3 solutions for banishing trigger points actually work! (Chapter 13)

A little-known technique for “fighting gravity” – This 2,000 year old technique developed by Hippocrates is a time-tested and PROVEN solution for fighting and even eliminating back pain… in both the short-term AND long-term! Sciatica Pain Relief

If you want to have effective and permanent Sciatica Pain Relief, you must first determine the root cause.  There are a number of different causes for Sciatica, and depending on which one caused the pain for you, certain procedures will be most suitable for you.

If your pain is caused by herniated discs, you might benefit from relieving the compression through Inversion Therapy.  An Inversion Table will – just as the name implies, inverts your position.  Being upside down for 15 minutes 2 times a day will surely relieve the pressure.  This is because an inverted position will pull your spine in the opposite direction will cause the spinal discs to go back to their correct form.  An inverted position will also cause the discs to relax.  What this does is increase circulation of the blood supply and oxygen which will heal nerves more quickly.

Sciatica Pain Relief can be achieved by knowing the cause.  Knowing the underlying condition will get you long term sciatic nerve pain.  Find a knowledgeable health care practitioner to accurately diagnose your condition and recommend the best treatment methods.

Avoid Sciatica Surgery

You are probably on this site because you have had enough of your Sciatic pain, and are considering surgery as a cure. As mentioned in numerous posts in this blog, we believe that surgery should be a last resort. There are tons of methods of getting rid of sciatic pain without surgery. Even though you think you’ve tried it all, there are some methods that for sure you have not heard about.

This might be hard to believe, but there are cures that are not being exposed to the public. Why might you ask? Here is something to think about – If more Sciatica sufferers discover how to get rid of their pain easily and at the comfort of their own homes, what do you think would happen to the profits of the medical professionals?

I mean no disrespect to any doctors reading this, but I am saying this out of my experience of not learning about the the natural cures sooner. I could not believe my doctor did not even consider sharing this information with me.

Sciatica surgery recovery time

if you are thinking about surgery you have to take into consideration sciatica surgery recovery time. Any form of surgery takes a considerable amount of recovery time. Surgery takes a toll on any body. Even if it is for healing something like sciatica, it is not without pain and time being completely unproductive. There are tissues that get damaged during any procedure, and the body needs time to heal. Recovery is spent both in the hospital and at home.

Recovery typically lasts several weeks to several months. This depends on the patients cooperation in taking part in the healing process. Yes, the patient must play a major role in the recovery process. Younger patients also recover faster and this slows down with age.

Sciatica surgery recovery time can be significantly shortened if the patient sets clear goals for him/herself. You must state a specific date in which you can be able to do a specific activity without any pain. Being specific is the key here. You must not however rush your recovery. Rushing will only slow down your recovery. Once you’ve thought of this, write it down. This is important – you must write it down, to prove to yourself that you are serious in getting better.

Your physician, if a good one will provide you instructions and constant supervision after surgery. Make sure to follow their instructions. Keep in mind that you are on your way to a life free of pain. Attitude is very important. It is natural have bad moods and emotional days, but please know that this will only slow down sciatica surgery recovery time. Have a positive outlook and a sense of expectancy that you will soon get up and about will take you there quicker than you think.

Aches In Glutes, Should I Continue To Exercise?

Question by bee: Aches In Glutes, Should I Continue To Exercise?
I research my symptoms on line & it sounds like they are either fit sciatica or posterior pelvic pain. I don’t feel ANY discomfort in my back (high or low.) My only symptom is dull aches directly in the center of my Buttocks. Both right and left but more so on the left. Is this sciatica or posterior pelvic pain or other?
I exercise 3-4 times a week, can this make it worse or will it help? I really want to continue exercising but I am wondering if certain things may worsen the condition? THANKS!!

Answer by ddti
I would continue to exercise until your practitioner advises you not to. Rarely does exercise worsen things, it usually helps.

Why does the probability of experiencing sciatic pain peaks in the 50s and then decline with more advanced age?

Question by Scarlett: Why does the probability of experiencing sciatic pain peaks in the 50s and then decline with more advanced age?
The Course of Sciatica Pain

“The incidence of sciatica increases in middle age. Rarely occurring before age 20, the probability of experiencing sciatic pain peaks in the 50s and then declines.

Often, a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather the sciatic nerve pain tends to develop over time.

The vast majority of people who experience sciatica get better within a few weeks or months and find pain relief with non-surgical treatment. For others, however, sciatica pain from a pinched sciatic nerve can be severe and debilitating.

There are a few symptoms that may require immediate medical, and possibly surgical, intervention, such as progressive neurological symptoms (e.g. leg weakness) and/or bowel or bladder dysfunction.
Because sciatica pain is caused by an underlying medical condition, treatment is focused on relieving the underlying causes of symptoms. Treatment is usually self-care and/or non-surgical treatment, but for severe or intractable cases surgery may be an option.”

Just thinking; By the time most of us reach 50’s we have put on a few extra pounds. In our 60’s most of us retire and have more time to relax and spend time at home. I agree with any pain one needs to seek medical help.

How can my husband relieve his Sciatica pain?

Question by jaynellekenney: How can my husband relieve his Sciatica pain?
My husband knows that weight loss, stretching and seeing a chiropractor will help this condition, and I am trying to motivate him to do these things. However, most nights he is in much much pain that he can hardly stand it. He cant find a position that does not cause sharp pain in his thigh and hip. ANy ideas on temporary relief?

Best answer:

Answer by cateyes
The best temporary relief is medication. 10 years ago when this first started with me I was put on a prescription arthritis medication (it’s been banned since then) and it thankfully helped me to keep working for almost 2 years when I finally had to have surgery. I waited too late for the surgery though and ended up with a lot of nerve damage in my butt, thigh, knee and leg. Whatever form of therapy or surgery he chooses don’t wait too long, the nerve damage is permanent. He can’t get what I was prescribed but there are similar (safer) drugs out there to be had. Talk to his doctor about ‘arthritis’ medications, explain that you’ve heard they helped many others in the same pain. Otherwise, sciatica is a terrible pain that is not easily eased. In the meantime try taking Aleve, OTC, although I’m on Oxycontin I still have to take this to relieve the additional pain I am in.

Edit: in reference to the first answer, of course he has disk problems! If he didn’t he wouldn’t have sciatic pain. Duh! And weight loss isn’t a cure all, believe me I should know. I was very thin when my disk first ruptured and no matter what therapy, etc. I went through nothing helped, at all!

headaches
What could be wrong with me !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I;m sick of feeling yuck, my mum does know and im going to have a MRI soon

Best answer:

Answer by Zunden
A lot of that sounds like things that come from stress (getting nervous, so you clamp your jaw, causing pain in your jaw and tension in your head and neck that builds into headaches and neck aches, for example) or growing pains. Some of the symptoms seem like they might be causing the others (headaches causing the feeling of sickness, for example, as often happens with more severe headaches). It feels like a lot of scary symptoms, but it might be nothing really serious. Trust me, for a while in my life I was going blind and losing my balance every time I stood up, and then I’d get random pains all over my body that would cause me to be unable to move whatever hurt for as long as it hurt. Turns out I have low blood pressure and need more calcium. Some things sound really scary, but actually aren’t. So, take a deep breath and relax a little.

Since I was already in the hospital they decided to just induce me.

I’m no doctor and am not familiar with sciatica, but TKD can be pretty strenuous on the legs and back. It’s is a martial art that focuses mostly on kicking and requires you be in pretty good physical condition (not saying that you are not, of course)

Usually TKD requires sparring with pads, so I don’t know if that might affect your sciatica. Certainly some of the stretches and movements can be helpful, but I think you might want to speak to your doctor before starting any martial art.

Good luck!

Fusion of the spine — other alternatives?

Question by : Fusion of the spine — other alternatives?
Went in to get a dissectomy today and the Dr. sent me for another MRI (3rd in 6 weeks) because of some recent changes. Came back saying that the disk at L5/S1 is completely blown out or extruded and that there is too much pressure on the nerve and that he needs to do a fusion asap.

I have been losing strength quickly, a lot in the past week in my leg and have a lot of permanent numbness in my foot and leg and these symptoms are getting worse by the day.

Seeing that I dont have a lot of time to decide I opted to come home and look at any other options available. I at least want to be mentally prepared for this.

Any other advice for this?

Any positive fusion stories?

To add to this problem… I have a lot of degeneration at L4/L5, L3/L4, and L2/L3. So I am also afraid of the potential dominoe effect. Currently though I dont have lower back pain, just the sciatica.

Thanks in advance! Please easy on the negativity, I need support here!
About 2 weeks ago I had my 3rd cortisone injection. Until then I was able to work w/ the aid of pain meds. About 2 hours after the injection I began having excrutiating pain that lasted for about 10 days. The pain went away overnight from a 10 to a 0 or 1, but the numbness stayed and has been increasing ever since along with the burning sensations.

The day before the pain went away, we decided to do the dissectomy. I couldnt walk, sit or stand for that week, just layed in bed the whole time.

Sorry to be so long winded, just want to lay the facts out.

Best answer:

Answer by mommanuke
My spinal fusion was at C4/5 C5/6. I was losing function and muscle mass in my left upper arm. The surgery went OK and the recovery was as expected. I no longer have the problem, although I occasionally have some pain, but not anything I can’t deal with.

If you are really uncertain, I would ask for a second opinion ASAP, as it sounds like the consequences of not getting any treatment could be pretty severe. If you have that many bad discs, maybe they would want to do the steel rod implantation through all of them, although this also has long term consequences. Only another surgeon can tell you if what they are wanting to do is appropriate.

Question by Haiduc: I had x rays and mri…but my spondololythesis won’t show up !?
What is the best test to check for spondolythesis? CT SCAN should tell me if i have it? I have lower right back pain, tender in the center of the back, and billateral mild sciatica…..MRI won’t show anything but im almost sure that i have spondo because the night before the symptoms i did backward stretching too much.

Answer by DrGaellon
Spondylolisthesis describes misalignment of the vertebrae relative to one another. If you have it, it WILL show up on MRI. If you have already had a normal MRI, then you do not have spondylolisthesis.
